Google's delayed Gemini 3.5 Pro and the $200 billion market hit that followed, and what it means when even the biggest company misses a date it set for itself.

Alphabet lost about $200 billion in market value in a single day last week. The reason: Google's next Gemini model is late, and the delay traces back to weak coding performance in internal testing.

Alphabet lost about $200 billion in market value in a single day last week. The reason: Google’s next Gemini model is late, and the delay traces back to weak coding performance in internal testing.

Google announced Gemini 3.5 Pro in May. It said the model was already running internally and would reach a broader rollout the following month. That did not happen. The model is still months behind schedule.

I bring this up because distributors get held to the same standard, just without a stock ticker to broadcast it. Promise a delivery date and miss it, and the customer remembers even if nobody wrote a headline.

Google has more engineers and more compute than almost any company on earth, and a missed target still cost it 4.4% of its stock price in a day. Size does not buy you a pass on hitting the date you said you would hit.

What is the last commitment your operation made that slipped, and did the customer find out from you first or from someone else?
